Private Patient Unit

Another mystery

By M & P Marples

Another mystery in the Museums Chad Negative Collection, taken in October 1983. The lamp outside the building says Private Patient Unit - can anyone shed any light on this and where it was?

This was the private nursing home on West Hill Drive, situated adjacent to the General Hospital. If you Google 29 West Hill Drive, Mansfield, the Nursing Home is still shown opposite this address, albeit very dilapidated, in 2011.

I think these houses or Private Patient Unit are on West Hill Drive at the side of A&E entrance to old General Hospital

Yes it's the private nursing home on West Hill Drive, although it's now in the process of being demolished. I was born here in 1953. To the left of the buildings would have been the A & E dept of the MGH. They were originally built as 3 or 4 private dwelling houses. At one time (early 1900's) they were occupied by Marchant's the tailors. It's a great shame they couldn't have been preserved.

Angela's right that's exactly where it was, I was born there in 1947 the year before the NHS was formed so obviously my parents had to pay, but I think it was still private in the early 1970s because an insurance company sent me there for a medical.

Later known as Clifton wing and had social service offices on the ground floor and ultrasound on the upper floor - if I recall correctly.
