The Old Meeting House

The Old Meeting House, in Mansfield is now over three hundred years old and is the oldest nonconformist building in Nottinghamshire still being used for its original purpose. It has a fascinating history which can be discovered in ‘Old Meeting House, Mansfield’ by J. Harrop White and ‘1702 – 2002 Three Hundred Years of Service, The Old Meeting House, Mansfield’ by Paul Dalgleish.

Many activities and groups are mentioned in the Meeting House history and one of these is the Mothers Meeting. Harrop White, told readers of his book ‘ The Mothers Meeting was in existence well before the monthly Calender [ Newsletter/log book] was started in 1889, but in September 1890 it was reformed as “Mothers Society”, and was to be confined to those mothers who attended the Chapel services.

The name “Mothers Meeting however soon crept back.’ This wonderful old photograph the property of Christine Wright shows a Mothers Meeting Outing in 1906 and was part of a recent history display in the Chapel.

With acknowledgements to Christine and Viv for the use of the photo.
