Wilson and Wards, Mrs ward resided on Nottm. Rd opp Oakham Close. Mr Trotter ran the outfitters, eventually Gordon Cox took it over. I know Gordon. Years ago a butcher from Shirebrook took his pigs around in the back of his Rolls Royce, saying they pay for it they can ride in it. Dorothy Hinton who was a big friend of mine had the Eight Bells, incl. a dress shop. On the Mkt place and cafe bars, a delightful lady who’s son Bill died in his early 40s, I called each week to see her, at Rufford Ave, next to Adela Roscoe the Palais owner who I knew as auntie Dorothy very interesting lady, was the first landlord the site originally the home of Samuel Brunts, the chief bell ringer at st Peters lived there, I believe that’s where it derived its name, Fox’s bakery at the far left bottom side, superb Almond Slices etc, often queuing outside, Mark Wilson

Nice photo of Church street. It looks to be around the 1940’s looking at the style of clothing and cars. Willson & Ward on the left hand side of the street were first in Outram street, Sutton-in-Ashfield in early 1920’s and selling boots and shoes. They first appeared on Church street around 1928 and survived until the early 1960’s

Looking at the motor vehicles I would think it’s late 50s or very early 60s.

I’ve actually found the same photo in a book ‘Mansfield in old postcards’ and it states that it was taken in the 1950’s
