Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital

Comedy actor Harry Worth visited Harlow Wood Hospital on more than one occasion, and it is evident from these photographs that this was enjoyed by both staff, patients, and Harry himself.

  • Hi my grandpa brought Chitty Chitty Bang Bang here and spent part of the day taking the children and staff for rides in her. I have pictures of when he brought her here, it would have been in 1969. Thanks, James Clifton, you can look me up on Facebook.

  • Hello Chris Hopkins your dad operated on my club feet at the tender age of 2 month old at Harlow Wood, I am 43 now & feet still going strong. I can remember my follow up operations and going to see him and remembering his hair on the back of his hands and drawing on my feet to were he was to operate. I also remember Sister Stone who I would insist to see on my check up visits until I was in my late teens. Could you remember me to your father who may remember me as my dad went to your home and asked if he would do my operations. Thank you the robust John Hopkins

  • I was very interested to look at these photographs. I have many happy memories of Harlow Wood as a child, from visiting patients on Christmas Day, swimming every Sunday in the hot pool!, standing next to my dad on a box aged 9 as he tried to encourage me to be interested in medicine as I watched him operate (I passed out and fell through a load of wires plugged into an old lady!). My dad said “Dont worry, I won’t tell your mother, have a cup of tea and come back in” Ha ha! I can remember I cycled there on my new bike and he sent me back home on it! He came to Mansfield about 1968, the year before I was born. I can imagine many people, patients and staff alike will recall the robust John Hopkins! He is alive and well and now aged 82!

  • These photos are before my time at Harlow Wood but very interesting, I do remember Nurse Gillespie though. I stayed between 1973-1975 and would love to be in touch with Karen Knight from Nottingham. If you are reading this Karen (it’s frothy man) or if anyone has a link I would love to hear from you.

  • Can you help me please? I was a regular at Harlow Wood from the early 60’s till it closed. I am desperate for any pictures of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (when it came!), Nurse Gillespie and a Staff Nurse Brown. I cannot honestly remember dates but any help would be appreciated.

  • Harry getting his orders. The lady giving Harry his orders was Matron Miss Smith [complete with pager in her pocket]. The man on the right is me when I was Hospital Secretary. The man on the left is Bill Dodd who was my Deputy.
