St Edmunds School Children and Coalite Horses

More pictures from the museum’s Chad negative collection marked as ‘ Coalite Stable Horses with St Edmunds school children, Mansfield Woodhouse.’ The photos were taken in June 1983, does anyone recall the event? Are you on the photographs? What is the ivy covered building in the first photograph?

  • The school children are stood on the Turner Hall Field, behind Woodhouse Doctors. 1983 was the year when I arrived at St Edmunds aged 7.

  • I think the ivy coloured building is Debdale Hall Recovery Hospital The horses were stabled somewhere behind the hall, my sister used them after the horses were moved. The field looks like St Edmunds Field at the back of the Turner Memorial Hall as you can just see the doctors surgery in the background.

Phil were you in Mr Lawsons class at St Edmunds School?

  • I was searching for Brunts Grammar School when I came across a mention of St. Edmund’s School, which I attended from 1950 to 1955/1956. From the second photograph, I believe the horses have just turned out from Priory Lane where the Yeoman Hill Park is, past St. Edmund’s church on the corner. I am pretty sure that the ivy covered building must be the one set back just before the church. Unfortunately, I don’t recall the name, though I’m sure that my parents talked to me about it. Was it once the home of one of the wealthy (pit owners?) of the area?
