Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital

Sailors Visit Ward 1

Among the visitors to Harlow Wood were these sailors from HMS Brecon in November 1979.

The photograph shows them with youngsters on Ward 1 who would have been encouraged by the hospital teachers to produced the display about HMS Brecon on the back wall.

Plaques

The two wood plaques which were on the walls in Ward 1, were removed when the hospital closed. It is unknown what happened to them.

Reason for the Visit

It has been suggested that that HMS Brecon was made of a type of fibre glass, and that this was the same material used in the Orthotics Departments at Harlow Wood for making prosthesis’s [artificial limbs]- can anyone verify this?

  • Wow, I remember that visit. I’m the one in the photo holding the string art picture of the ship that I had made for the sailors. I spent half my childhood in Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital. Initially on the children’s ward and then on ward 1 the teenage girls ward.
