Mystery Betrothal

Discovered in Notes & Comments Mansfield R eporter & Sutton Times July 8th 1932

The Mayor of Mansfield (Councillor J Pollard) some months ago, as we stated in our last issue, was asked by a young gold digger out in Western Australia if he could find him a wife.

His worship invoked the assistance of the Press with the result that the young man out in Koolgardie received many letters and photographs from girls who were ready to share their lot with the young prospector in far away lands.

The man has now made his choice and has informed the Mayor that he thinks the choice will prove to be a wise one. We hope so.

At the same time we feel a girl is taking an enormous risk in going to the other side of the world as the prospective bride of a man she does not know and has never seen. On the other hand the risk is not all on her side. The man might be very disappointed with his bride-to-be on seeing her.

That the marriage will turn out to be a success, and that they may be happy and enjoy life, is the wish of everyone interested we feel sure. “When the time comes” says the bridegroom in his letter to the Mayor, “I shall not forget you.”

Perhaps that means when he has made his pile out in the gold-bearing districts. We shall see.

The mystery is – did  the young lady go out to marry her Australian Gold Digger, who was she, and did they live happily ever after?

  • I would contact The West Australian Newspaper, this would be a story I bet they would love to cover. There’s not many who can last out in the desert, so would be good to know what happened.

  • Koolgardie is spelt with a C, Coolgardie, I have been there myself, it is now a ghost town not far from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, the gold fields.
