Another Chronicle Hero (As reported in Mansfield Chronicle 1st August 1918)

Sad news came to hand this week of the death of Walter Sprotberry, a member of the ‘Chronicle’ staff who was killed in action on the 17th June in France. He was called to the colours on April 14th 1916 and joined the Royal Field Artillery as a driver. Although he had only resided in Mansfield a short time he had made many friends, and was a most willing workmate being always anxious to do a good turn wherever possible. He was also a clever musician and many friends in Mansfield will remember his abilities on the piano. Walter was a native of Holbeach Lincolnshire, and our sympathies extend to his bereaved wife. He was only 27 year of age and his married life was very short. This makes the fifth member of the Mansfield Typographical Society who has made the great sacrifice.
