Does anyone know where this shop was?

I had a quick drive round yesterday but couldn’t see it.

  • I live on Jenkins Avenue and used to go to that shop as a child, when I visited my Aunt on Kay Road. I moved here 16 years ago today, 31st of December 2006. There have been changes and a lot more children. The bumps are a good deterrent when there are schools, small children and lots of cars.
The only problem on my street is someone abandoned their owned house gifted in a granny’s will. That is something that needs councils able to do something about, but it’s not a bad place to live, unless you are like my brother in law and look down your nose. The shop has had a makeover though, I personally liked it before. Its lovely, friendly staff and nothing too much trouble.

  • Elaine Phillips did you know my Aunty Kath and Uncle Jack Page who lived on Stone Crescent? Did you attend Moor Lane and did you have a little friend who went to live in New Zealand? My name is Kerry MacDonald and I attended Moor Lane between 1964 and 1968. I now live in Australia😀

  • Gosh! I remember this shop so well.  As a child I used to be sent with my sister to Kaye’s shop for bread & milk from our home in Bailey Crescent.  We used to feel so grown up to be going to the shop on our own!

  • Sowters lived on Hardy Place then Oakdale Road,I think they lived up Ladybrook backside of Ladybrook Pub,they parked the bus up there.

  • My dad Malcolm (Mac) worked for Sowters, driving back and forth between wherever the bus was and the warehouse on Somersall St, restocking items as they were running out. I used to go with him in the Sowters small van; can’t quite remember the make-might have been a Thames? I do remember it being a ‘buff’ colour though. I also remember the chip van at the end of Birks Road. Often used to queue there for a fish and mix. A lot cheaper than today though!

  • I have just found this site (thanks to Christina White of MDC). I was born on Somersall St in 1953. Mum and Dad moved onto Lees Ave. shortly afterwards. Lees Ave. was still under construction at the time they told me. We lived there throughout so I remember Kayes Corner pretty well. I don’t remember Mr Kaye Jnr selling groceries from a single decker bus but I do remember Mr Sowter and Mr Place both doing so. I think Mr Place lived at the brow of Somersall St (at that time it was partly a dirt road from there on to Townroe Drive. I think Mr Sowter lived somewhere close to the petrol station on Ladybrook Lane. Happy New Year everybody. Carl.

  • Remember this shop very well and was a regular stop off on the way back from the ‘top field’. Anyone remember the mobile chip shop which stood on the green opposite. Called ‘Brian’s’ I think.

  • That’s great. Thanks for this. I will have to take a drive up there to take a look.

  • Hello Liz, It is situated as Berisford and Darron have said, but much has changed over the years. The shop opened in 1963. It was built by the Council to serve the large population of the estate, in addition to the precinct that was built on Ladybrook Lane. The houses to the north of the estate it was felt, required an additional shop for their needs. The shop was a rented property, and as I have previously said on another page, to be called a Supermarket, a store has to be of a certain square footage, therefore, Kay’s Shop had to be a Self Service Store. The young Mr Kaye and his family lived in the flat over the shop. Before taking over the shop, Mr. Kaye junior used to travel round the streets with an old converted single decker bus selling greengrocery’s.

I also drove through the Ladybrook Estate on my recent visit to the old town. I could not recognise the old place. I have noticed through my life experiences, that when an area is inundated with traffic humps, as I found out on my visit to the Ladybrook Estate no one wishes to visit or reside. I would hate to drive through the estate every day.

  • Hi Liz, It’s at the corner of Jenkins Avenue and Armstrong Road – very much still there, I think it’s a ‘Premier Convenience Store’ now (but was known as the ‘VG’ when ‘I were a lad’) Regards Darren

  • It’s the junction with Armstrong Rd and Jenkins Ave. I remember some 50 years ago my mother saving with their Christmas club, some good it did us, as with many such schemes, it went west with the organiser, just before payout day!
