  • With regards to The Little Stores advert, this shop, I believe was owned by my great-grandfather John Badley who also owned a tailors shop on Church Street (J. C Badley, tailors and outfitters) that in later years moved to White Hart Street. As a child in the 50,s I recollect the Little Stores being run by my great aunts, Mary, Phyllis and Muriel Badley. By then the shop mainly sold babyware.

  • I wondered why my Nanna always called the Co op “stores”! She used to do her food shopping there in the ground floor supermarket – including their 99 tea leaves………I’m not sure what year it moved but I can remember that when you had paid (and got your stamps) you exited out the side into the genel between it and the charity furniture shop (old Wilkos).

  • ….and of course ‘The Big Stores’ was the Co-op, they used to advertise themselves as lot’s of ‘Stores’ under one roof. My mother always called the Stockwell Gate / Queen St branch the ‘Stores’!

  • That’s correct Darren. It was a shop two doors down from the old Crowne pub (I think now renamed The Vibe?) It was there in the 1930’s.

  • The Little Stores was a shop on Stockwell Gate, just beyond the Co-op. There’s a photo on picturethepast (Ref NCCW001832) that shows it clearly.
