MANSFIELD SHOPS

At the top of Pecks Hill there was a row of shops – a newsagents and general store, a ladies hairdressers, a chemists, a fish and chip shop and a garage.  Half way down the hill there was a small engineering works owned and operated by a Mr Thrall who lived at No. 2 Carter Lane

There may have been other another shop amongst the row on Carter Lane and Newgate Lane. There was a row of shops at the junction of Sandy Lane and Ravensdale and maybe one halfway down Sandy Lane.

But there was a shop in the row on Ratcliffe Gate named  Newtons that specialised in  baby and infant but also if my memory serves me right ladies underwear. I know at the time I was of a toddler/ pre school age my Mother often took me with her to that shop.

  • Her name was Doris, she used to sell skeins of wool, I used to go in there with my mum, and always got a sweet, we were regulars, my mum was always knitting, and I had the pleasure of holding the wool while mum wound it into a ball.
