  • I was in the Clipstone scout group, a bit later than that photo was taken. It must have been around 1956/57 when I joined, the scoutmaster then was a Mr Allcock, I was in Hawk patrol, Bob Dukes was patrol leader.
Joining the scouts changed the course of my life. We went camping on the North York Moors for a week, must have been August 1958, we went by train from Retford, changing trains at York. The journey there & back, and seeing the tank engines working near where we were camping, plus riding behind them to have a day at Whitby just got me hooked! So, on starting back at school after the summer holidays, I got talking to some of my classmates & discovered they already went trainspotting, so that got me started on a lifetime of being a avid rail enthusiast.
I am now 75 and am still out regular, photographing the trains, although steam will always be my favourite over the modern traction. My earliest photos date from early 1959, due to my parents buying me a camera for Xmas 1958.

  • The Rev Fr Hatter invited me to be Scout Master in 1958 when I lived at Clipstone and was scout leader until my work moved me away in 1961.
