  • I believe the school closed around 2012? Has it been put to good use, or knocked down perhaps? All mostly happy memories of those old school days. Can’t get to visit just yet. Thanks.

  • Mr Ingham – Yes! Mid fifties for me, good and friendly Headmaster, I was aged about ten. Around the time of the Coronation of H.M. (’53’).

  • Nice to hear of Eric Mace. I too was in the choir and we used to compete at Selston Music Festival. When we won we always drank pop out of the cup. Mr Ingham was so lovely.
I used to sing a duet called “the one eyed cook”. Remember the choir getting 98 out of a possible hundred at Selston. I then went on to Mansfield secondary technical school.

  • My Mum is the third from the right, Muriel Kiss, she emigrated to Australia soon after this photo was taken.
I went to Newgate Lane in the fifties, but my brother David, and sister Tracey were at school at this time.
Lovely photos and brings back some happy times, with not much in terms of money but lots of happy memories of a great little school.

  • I was at that Sports Day but I am not in any of the photos. I would have been wearing round NHS glasses. Fine times.

I remember Mr Dunn, Mrs Goodwin, Miss Pritchard. I remember Sports days. I remember I liked going to school. I remember the sweet shop next to the School, Nellie Entons, Len Asher, and the barber lower down Newgate Lane.
I remember lots more quite fondly.

  • I was there 1970, remember Mr Coates. If we were late we would walk along the railway to get to school. Remember egg & spoon race, three legged race, sack race, playing rounders and not a care in the world.

  • I went to Newgate Lane School from 1948-51.
I remember a lane running alongside the playing field, going under the railway bridge, and just before it on the right was a riding stables, I think run by 2 sisters, they used old railway coaches for the stables, my sister Kay used to have riding lessons every Saturday.
I think there was also a rag and bone yard in the lane too.

  • I would say that the building is the Merdian factory which had a sister plant on Belvedere street

  • Picture No. 1. Does anyone know what the tall building / structure is in the background? I see that scaffolding has been erected with workmen also visible. It looks quite high for the Newgate Lane area. I wasn’t resident in Mansfield in 1970 so didn’t have the opportunity to pay a visit to the old school and it’s areas. I know the location well however from my childhood days!

  • I was at Newgate Primary for a year and a half when my Dad moved us from Scotland to Mansfield for work. Happy memories from my school time, not least the headmaster Mr Coates, who was a genuinely lovely man who seemed to enjoy his job. I was heartbroken when we had to move back to Edinburgh.

  • Nursery School attendee aged five. Mrs Pritchard was our teacher! We used to sleep for a short while during our day – Don’t know if Mrs Pritchard did! – nice lady, never forgotten. Left the main school aged eleven. Lived locally in those far off days. I do remember Mr Dunn, he was the art teacher (plus history) I believe.

  • I remember Miss Robinson. I was at Newgate School from 1962 and she was my first teacher in the junior part of the school. She was a most lovely lady and I was sorry when I had to move up to the next class. She seemed very old to me at the time!
