The Old Co-op Dairy

From 1949 to 1951. I used to walk past this dairy at 6.30 a.m. most mornings to work.

I would walk past the line of horses and carts being loaded with milk crates from the loading bays along side of the road that was unmade in those days… The loading bays were built up to the same height as the drays…Which in the photograph look demolished.

  • I remember the Co-op dairy on Southwell Road very well, it was next to Westfield Transport where I started my working life in their workshops in 1962 and being the most junior person I used to fetch cigarettes from the dairy canteen for the older workers. I recall the canteen was up about four flights of stairs might even have been more, I used to run up them, must have been a bit fitter then.

  • I worked there in 1940 and we had horse and cart, then later they had electric vans. If you look at my life story you will see me with horse & cart. (See under People – Arthur Wright, Life Story]

  • Forget the Dairy !!!! Where has the old Signal Box Gone ?? Used to see the old signalman pull the levers to change the rail direction of the lines….I believe from his box he would operate the railway signals to alert the train drivers to stop the train when required to do so….I can also remember the Train turntable just off the rear of Sibthorpe Street at the side of Cinderella’s Walk…Used to love to help the train driver turn the train round, if he would let us.

  • The picture is the old Co-operative Grocery Warehouse on Victoria Street, Mansfield. It first was the Mansfield and Sutton Co-operative Society, then due to a take over became the Mansfield and Worksop Co-operative Warehouse.  The old dairy was at the side this building of which became part of warehouse stock when the dairy move to Southwell Road in Mansfield.

I worked in the grocery warehouse in the late 60’s the moved onto to transport department in the 70’s enjoying many years and made many friends at the co-operative shops. Late in the 70’s the society became the Greater Nottingham Co-operative due to another merger.! Happy days and happy times at the co-op I wonder what the Rochdale Pioneers would think of todays shopping giants etc etc,. Must be some ex co-op employers out there, look forward to there memories and comments.
