  • The site of Foister Clay and Ward, later Meridian/Courtaulds, was away from the site of the present bus station.
It ran from half way along Quaker Lane opposite the former Quaker Meeting House and burial ground and behind another former chapel with another small burial ground and continued to the top of Quaker Lane. The edge of its site was near the junction of Quaker Lane and Belvedere Street. Right at that corner on Belvedere Street was Bob Crome’s butchers shop and a watchmaker/repairer run by, I think, a Polish gentleman. The factory site ran down Belvedere Street and behind Urquharts Chiropodists (before they moved to Nottingham Road), three terraced houses only lit by gas; Stainforths’, General store/sweet shop, and was behind the only remaining group of old shops at the end of Stockwell Gate including Henshaws the Furnishers. The whole site was demolished and cleared.
Between the factory and Gunners China Shop on Stockwell Gate was a secret garden which I think belonged to the China Shop.
