ref. Station St. shops, in 1956 the Hibbert Shop was not built on the corner of Albert St. Station St. junction. Walkers Hairdressers was there in front of the Embassy Ballroom. Midland Tyre Co and Midland Garage, [JSFowkes] and in the corner adjacent to the Goods Yard entrance was the IDEAL Table tennis saloon. we went there in the mid 50s to keep fit during the winter months. At that time most towns had a table tennis league. I have never seen so many table tennis tables they were on 2 floors I believe and it was a very popular sport. The other side of Station St, Meggits on the corner, Lawtons, Railway Inn,Walkers Foundry, Henry James, builders, Polce Station, Nixon and Knowles etc.

My daughter went to the School of Dancing in 1964, it was then called Gabriel’s School of Dancing. I remember the building before it was a dancing school being a Table Tennis Hall. So therefore, if Collson and Swift had the dance hall before Gabriel, the photograph may well have been earlier.

Possible early 1960s great old picture of the good old days of the Old Mansfield, almost sure it was two way traffic on this street. Memories long gone - how time as changed but may be not for the better.
