July Flood 1973

Mansfield Town Centre was totally overcome with water in July 1973 causing huge damage to local shops and businesses.

  • I remember this day very clearly as we were on Carr Bank Park as it started to rain. We dashed for shelter and l had never seen rain like it. It churned up the new road as it was then that went past the Metal Box. I now live in the tropics so see rain like this in the monsoon season but in Mansfield, never!

  • My father Brian managed the butchers shop until he retired in December 1992.The man pictured outside Cuddys was the barbers owner, a man I knew as Nev.

  • I remember this well! My grandfather was still alive, Bill Hardy potato merchant and grocer of 119 Broxtowe Drive – died the winter of ’73. He used to drive passed there a lot often droppping at the Barbers which is next to the butcher’s just in the left of the picture.
