War Graves at St Albans

I note that the War Graves have been transcribed. I  have photographed the same ones, but, we are missing the same two graves. According to the CWGC there is  Driver Robert Edwin NAYLOR died 1940 grave 1379 section B and from Forest Town, and the other is Flying Officer kenneth OATES died 1944 grave 858 section A, also from Forest Town. any ideas where they could be.

  • The WW2 war graves you are looking for are in the churchyard extention, as you walk up the path you will see the commision headstone to Trooper Ward on your right. the other two are Private memorials Driver Naylor is on the right and Flying Officer Oates is on the left. When I return to work after the holidays I will let you know the location of the 2 private memorials along with their discription.

  • Our page on the Commonwealth War Graves in St Alban’s churchyard is just those from WW1. The ones you mention above are WW2 and I believe are in the extension churchyard. They are harder to find because they do not have the standard war grave memorial (we can only suppose the families decided against this). There are also others such as the Skilling Brothers who are not on the CWGC list. There is just just one standard war grave in this section to WARD, Trooper, WILLIAM, 7931842. I can see this all warrants another page on war graves at St Alban’s

  • Yes I now realised that, I did find the Ward grave in the extension, so the other’s as you say must be on family memorials. I did pick up Cpl Francis Sydney Pickering who fell 8th June 1917 and his commemorated on the Loos memorial, So it’s back to reading the small print some fine day. For interest the photos that I have taken are on Find a Grave, the “Grave Hoppers” site and Military Images. [28th61st] You have an excellent and informative site and very easy to navigate. Alf
