Unusual Visitors at Harlow Wood Hospital

Two unusual photos taken at Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital in the early 1930’s. Who are the people? where have they ridden from? were they friends of the Duchess of Portland? as it is known everyone was encouraged to visit her ‘beloved hospital’.

  • Apologies: Colonel Abel Smith (1933 – 2004) not 1994.

  • Just a guess but the man, particularly in the first picture, resembles Colonel Richard Francis Abel Smith (1933-1994) who lived at Blidworth Dale, close to Harlow Wood. He was related to the Royal Family through his mother who was a niece of Queen Mary. He had two sisters but no identification of the two horsewomen. I expect there might have been a social connection with Welbeck.
