Mansfield Shops

Handley’s shop taken in July 1974, do you remember them, where was it?what did they sell? The Chad photographer also found what appears to be a bell tower of special interest, does this relate to an earlier building?

  • Robert Brothers Circus advertised in the windows – Boxing Kangeroo? Really? Did anyone see the Circus show in the month of April, (also visible in the picture)? Good photos as usual, very familiar location past and present.

  • It was a home furnishing shop selling furniture along with carpets, curtains, lamps, pictures and paintings etc. The business was owned by Mr and Mrs Reg Handley who lived on Oak Tree Lane, Sales Director was Mr Chris Rose from Sheffield other staff included my Mum, Pat Poxon who was Office Manager and PA to Mr Handley, Pat Reville and quite an extensive team making soft furnishings and carpet fitters . Sadly the business was closed pending compulsory purchase for development of the inner ring road. Mr Handley died a few years later and Mrs Handley moved on to the Isle of White. A prime business sadly lost .

  • I left Mansfield a year before the photo was taken but I seem to recall it was a furniture shop, it’s location was on the corner of Belvedere St. and Sutton Rd. The piece of road in front of Handley’s was a slip lane for vehicles wanting to turn left from Belvedere St. into Sutton Rd. It avoided having to stop at the traffic lights. The road going off to the right behind the car which looks like a Hilman Minx is Bancroft Lane. Opposite Handley’s was the old Empire cinema on the corner of Sutton Rd. and Rosemary St. and behind the cinema was Rosemary St. school which I attended between 1958 and 1962.

  • Handleys was a furniture shop at 2 Belvedere street.

The building was originally built in 1870 as an Anglican mission room. It was built to serve the workmen who were building the railway line to Worksop (earning the name “Navvy Mission”, but also called “The Red Barn” in later years)
