Sherwood Hall School/Samworth Academy

I am aware that in some of the comments added on the Sherwood Hall Technical School pages, people think that the school was burnt to the ground and then the Samworth Church Academy was built. To dispel this myth I have just searched through some of my earlier photographs which show the old school, which was renamed Sherwood Church Academy in September 2008 still being used while the academy was being built.

One section of the school remained near the Stuart Avenue entrance and it was in that building there was a fire in April 2011. This is featured in another page on this web site.

  • Hi Pauline,

living out here Norfolk it’s not always possible to keep up to date. Your photo of the Stuart Avenue entrance certainly takes me back. As I remember we were not allowed to use the main doors and had to walk around the back to enter the building. That some of the old building still survives and is being used for its original purpose is good to hear. I was in the first tranche of pupils in the schools first year and Joe Radford wanted the building kept in pristine condition and one way was for us all to wear “indoor shoes” which we kept in a bag on our hooks or in our lockers. I’m pleased its still there ad next time I’m in Ravenshead I will try to pop over to view it.

    Cheers
