Peatmans - Pea Stall and Fair Rides

This photo shows Peatmans Pea Stall at a fair on Chesterfield Road. Family members William Peatman is on the left and Winifred Hazzard on the right. The lady in the middle used to help out on the stall.

The Peatmans were travelling people from Yorkshire and they used to come and ‘winter up’ at Gilberts Yard Mansfield. There telephone number was Mansfield 23, this was a time when not many people had a telephone. They used to have their Pea Stall at Buttercross, near a monument in Mansfield. The stall had an open fire fuelled by coke to start it and a big pan of peas on it. They used to take the water in a bin up to the stall on the back of their lorry.

This lorry was used to take them on their holiday to Blackpool , Scarborough etc. They used to cover it over with a tarpaulin, about 20 of them would go and they used red petrol in the lorry.

Family members made the wooden figures which stood on top of the pea stall, they made a lot of figures and things on the fair rides. At the end of the season they used to take up the floor boards of the rides and pick up loose change people had dropped when they were on the rides.

Grandad Bill Peatman was in the scrap metal business, and Peatmans were the people who broke up the last Water Mill off Bath Lane, Mansfield – Goldie Wade and Goldie. It was in the Chad at that time. A family member recalls he used to go on the fair rides for free to try them out.

After Grandad Peatman retired from the Pea Stall it passed on to various family members including Winifred and Mark Hazzard. They did not have it for long and it was sold to people who were already on Mansfield Market.
