Mystery Building in Forest Town

By Paul Mapes

This brick building stands just off the road, among the trees at the top of New Mill Lane, Forest Town. Does anyone know why it is there/what it was built for?

Ordnance Survey maps for mid-to-late twentieth century show this and another small structure to its left. There's a label 'El Sub Sta' which could refer to either.

I have seen this so many times over the years, I once thought it was one of the old style public toilets. As it is, I believe it has something to do with the old WW1 camp,Clipstone camp which occupied these fields all those years ago. I may be wrong, but I have always been led to believe that this was what it was originally for.

This is a look-out point/gun position built early in World War Two and it covers the fields behind in case of glider or paratroop drops during the expected German invasion. There was also a roadblock nearby

Haven't seen the maps you mention Darren but would assume the El Sub Sta refers to- Electricity Sub Station.

This is listed, or was , on the gov site for archeology  records as

an ARP post WWII

I found it whilst researching local sites ( the practice trenches etc )
