Mansfield General Post Office

This photo was taken on 25th April 2017 of the former General Post Office on Church Street, now closed. We are now left with at least two mysteries, what is going to happen to this historic building?, and what has happened to the memorial plaque to Post Office workers who died in the wars?

  • Having been one or two times in recent months to redeem parcels left at the Mansfield Woodhouse sorting office,on Old Mill Lane, I have seen the commemorative plaque, spoken of here-beside the counter in this building. To your right as you stand at said counter.

  • Might I suggest that it is found out who actually owns the building. I would think it is owned by the General Post Office, as I have seen other buildings they own with For Sale signs upon them… Secondly, can it be bought and by whom. Can the M.D.C. afford to by it, if not, then perhaps a fund set up by the people of the town  for the purchase of the said building. Maybe the National Trust could be interested in it. One thing is for sure , the folks of Mansfield do not wish for the building to go into disrepair, nor do they want it to be changed into shops or cafe’s. Finally, what about the Museum moving in.

  • I suggested that the War Memorial Plaque could be displayed within the Town Hall. Later I enquired about its whereabouts and was informed that it had been taken to the Post Office Collection Point office on the Old Mill Lane Industrial Park. Surely it deserves a more prominent location that this?

  • I was told that the War Memorial Plaque has been taken to the sorting office at Mansfield Woodhouse.  It would be nice if it could be placed in  public place, such as the Museum.

As for the future of the historic building, which has stood on Church Street since July 1913, lets hope it doesn’t become a victim of ‘progress’ and deteriorate beyond repair.
