Blackgate Yard (no 45)

George William Cox with his two youngest children Rennie and George in the door of 45 Blackgate Yard, Woodhouse, 1940
Glenn Sutcliffe
This 1979 image of number 45 Blackgate Yard was taken by Sydney Booth while visiting his mother Agnes 'Dorothy' Cox. The chairs on the right are outside the house then occupied by Dorothy's eldest son George (by her second marriage). Behind the stone wall on the left can just be seen the row of brick toilets for numbers 40, 41, 42, 43, 44 and 45. A fresh load of coal has been delivered for number 45. Also on view are galvanised dustbins and the old doorway to 45, now blocked up. The piece of ground in front of 45 hidden from view was included in the rent. Taken in winter as the puddles are frozen

  • This brings back so many memories. I lived with my grandma, Annie Witham, and my mum at the top of Blackgate Yard.
